CHIMPANZEE HABITUATION EXPERIENCE (Chex)

The chimpanzee habituation experience is one of the most popular activities for tourists who come to Uganda. Habituation involves a team of trackers following the chimpanzees in order to get them accustomed to human presence so that visitors can enjoy viewing these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat. It involves waking up very early in the morning and seeing the chimpanzees waking up, and following them for the whole day till they go to bed.

The Chex activity presents tourists with the opportunity to join the habituation team to track the chimpanzees, and this could be for one to three days. The activity takes place only in Kibale National Park.

Previously tourists of all categories paid a uniform fee for the Chex experience as indicated below:

MOUNTAINEERING

UWA is introducing a new fees structure for tourists interested in climbing Rwenzori Mountains National Park (RMNP). UWA has consolidated the fees that tourists interested in mountaineering can pay, and done away with the previous arrangement when tourists sometimes found themselves paying for activities in piecemeal:

Old Mountaineering fees

Rwenzori Mountains NP US$480 US$365 UShs 350,000

The new tariff structure introduces different fees for each mountaineering stage as indicated in the table below:

LMNP US$10 per person US$20 per person US$50 per person

FILMING FEES

Many international conservation and media organisations come to Uganda to film attractions and activities in the national parks. UWA has always charged Ush100, 000 per person per day for filming in all the national parks except Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP) where the charge was Ush150, 000 per person per day.

In the new tariff structure, the commercial filming fee has been made uniform for all national parks at US$100 per person per day.

FINES FOR OFF-TRACK DRIVING

Many tourists are sometimes tempted to drive off the tracks during game drives so that they can get a closer look at the animals which are sometimes far from the roads. This is illegal and UWA has been levying a fine of Ush100,000/= from those caught in the act.

In the new tariff structure, the fine has been increased to US$150, and we believe this will be a good deterrent to those who break the law.

NB: UWA WILL NOT CHARGE EXTRA FEES FROM TOURISTS WHO WILL HAVE PAID FOR THEIR GORILLA PERMITS OR FOR ANY OTHER ATTRACTIONS IN THE NATIONAL PARKS BY 1st AUGUST 2004 WHEN THE NEW TARIFFS TAKE EFFECT.
