Welcome to the fascinating crater lake of abundant coloured frogs. Here, you will experience real African village hospitality and a memorable stunning view of the sunset on the lake. CVK (Crater Valley Kibale Resort Beach Lodge), 21 km from Fort Portal town and 10 km from Kanyanchu, is another alternative on the border of the Park. The lodge sits on tranquil crater Lake Nyabikere (meaning lake of frogs), facing the Mountains of the Moon (Rwenzori), with snow visible on a clear day. Self-contained rooms have hot and cold running water as well as sitting flush toilets and standing showers. CVK is a family-run establishment and so the ambience is very friendly and food the best you will find around.

CVK is in a real village, on the shores of L. Nyabikere (lake of frogs), 13 miles (21km) or 30 minutes’ drive south of Fort Portal Town on the Kamwenge Road.

CVK is mostly famous for its clean, picturesque lake/hills and the presence of 13 species of primates in the nearby Kibale tropical rain forest, eg chimps, monkeys and baboons. There are also lions (rarely seen), elephants and very many interesting birds (e.g.. grey parrots, hammercopfs , fish eagles, king fishers and green-breasted pitta ).

Accommodation/Campsite
CVK offers fine accommodation in attractively grass-thatched, ecological (eco) bandas (40 beds). Self contained rooms are operational. The terraced campsite (20 tents), covered by a soft carpet of evergreen grass, overlooks the blue and tranquil lake. The ‘bandas’ (cottages) are set out singly and well spaced out among broad-leaved evergreen trees. These bandas provide the wanted coolness and real privacy for rest. Self-contained rooms with hot showers. 2 bedroomed lounging house; self-catering.

US$3.00 only p.p.p.n. (flush toilets, showers & free tap water at Campsite). Also, food & drinks are available.

Activities

  • Taking a relaxing walk around the lake and in the beautiful unique eco-gardens.
  • Watching a variety of birds (>100 species seen in one day), butterflies, moths, coloured frogs, toads, lizards, a humble hippopotamus, & monkeys (e.g.. Vervet, Red-tailed & b/w Colobus).
  • Enjoying canoeing, swimming and fishing in a fresh bilharzia-free lake.
  • Taking a guided walk to the Top of the World,
  • Visiting numerous nearby crater lakes, homesteads, tea estates, a bi-weekly open-air market at Rwaihamba, Kibale tropical rain forest (see chimp food tree above), and enjoying community traditional dancing, singing and reciting of poems.
  • Viewing snow at the Equator (can be seen on clear days) on the fabled and beautiful ‘Mountains of the Moon’ also called Mt. Rwenzori.
  • Enjoying romantic and really beautiful sunset over the great Mountains of the Moon. A most stunning view indeed!!
  • Enjoying a camp-fire and story telling at the Camp site (right).
  • Nature walk to 8 caves along the Rurama Trail.

CVK offers delicious, both local and foreign meals, prepared by a local family. Prices range from only US$1.80 to$9.00. We also offer locally-grown & fertilizer-free coffee, African tea and cooled drinks (beers, sodas), Uganda ‘waragi’ (local gin), honey wine, etc.
